Volkswagen has teamed up with the Discovery Channel—and marine biologist Luke Tipple—for Discovery Channel’s annual ‘Shark Week’ event, to create an ‘underwater car’, a shark observation cage.
The one-of-a-kind ‘Volkswagen Beetle Mobile Shark Cage’ is a shark cage in the shape of the iconic Beetle, which divers can use to drive along the ocean floor and interact with sharks.
The mobile Beetle has: a structure made from tubular alumium, alloy wheels, iconic bug headlights, a full-air system that divers can hook up to, and propellers.
“We wanted the integration to be authentic and fit naturally with the Volkswagen brand, imprinting our signature style on Shark Week,” Justin Osborne, general manager of marketing communications for Volkswagen America, said. “The Beetle Shark Cage plays on the silhouettes of two of the most iconic images, the shark fin and the Volkswagen Beetle.”
